There's nothing like wearing a one-of-a-kind piece of jewellery that reflects your individual style and tells a romantic story. Much like Mandopop singer A-do, 42, who proposed to his longtime girlfriend with a 1-carat princess-cut diamond stunner that bore the initials 'AD', created by bespoke jeweller Michael Trio.

The Singaporean-born singer who dated his girlfriend on-and-off for over 20 years approached his brother-in-law, who owns the local jeweller, to design a ring that reflects their special love story and rich history. Supposedly A-Do (aka Du Cheng Yi) knew his girlfriend, long before he was a big star; when was a still a construction foreman who worked for her family's business. They tied the knot earlier this month in an intimate ceremony on 9 January.

"Here at Michael Trio, we give couples the chance to create individualised rings of the highest quality to match the personality of each person in the relationship," says director Jadon Zeng. "No relationship is cookie-cutter and no engagement ring should be either."

Here are a few things to bear in mind when making a ring from scratch.

Set aside a month

Making a ring from scratch will require at last one month of production. It starts with the first consult to discuss a suitable design. Then a week later you review a 3D rendering of the ring. Once confirmed, the jeweller commences design creation – mould creation, casting and setting of diamonds.

Choose loose diamonds

With a growing trend of customers buying loose GIA-certified stones for their customised rings, Michael Trio ensures that its diamonds are competitively priced. "There is no middleman involved, so the savings will be passed on to you. Everything from sourcing to design creation is done in-house, so you benefit from controlled pricing and excellent customer service from start to end."

Don't forget the wedding band

Do remember that there will be a wedding band that will sit next to your one-of-a-kind proposal ring. Think of how to seamlessly marry them together so they look perfect side by side, like husband and wife!
