Newlyweds in Singapore are getting more unconventional with their preferences in wedding cake design, says Edna Pan, founder of six-year-old local artisanal bakery My Fat Lady. While couples would generally tend to opt for elegant, tiered fondant cakes several years ago, she has received more atypical requests in the past year. These are the current trends:

1. Rustic cakes

Some couples have asked for "naked cakes", which come without frosting or it is so minimal that individual cake layers can be seen, says Edna. There were others who wanted their cakes to be "roughly" frosted with buttercream for a rustic feel. "They are usually topped with flowers, and/or wrapped with lots of foliage."

2. Dessert tables

While dessert tables are a growing trend for several years now, the set-up is getting more elaborate with beautiful backdrops and increasingly creative ideas. "It began with cupcake, cake pops, macarons and mini tarts, but the repertoire has expanded to include other pastries like panna cotta, eclairs and jelly cups. Couples are also paying more attention to including the dessert table as part of their entire wedding décor theme, instead of a standalone highlight."

3. Audacious aesthetics

Black is indeed back, as the colour is regularly requested at My Fat Lady. "Apart from black design elements, couples have also experimented with angular shapes in the style of Art Deco. There are also those who ask for an entire tier, out of three, in gold; or a completely gold cake."

4. Vintage

Vintage, or retro, cake styling is still as popular as ever, if not more, says Edna. "The ladies still adore romantic cream-coloured cakes with lots of lace details and blush-coloured flowers, such as roses and peonies."
