How to throw a Steampunk wedding

Color:

Do you think HG Wells and Jules Verne's depiction of a post-apocalyptic future, where steam-powered machinery sustains mankind, could possibly exist? If you're a geek like me and know exactly what I'm talking about, then you should definitely throw a Steampunk wedding like this inspired shot! Can you imagine how amazing the set-up would look like and the cool outfits you can wear? Here's a quick style guide for the ultimate Steampunk wedding in Singapore.

The wardrobe

Think 19th century British Victorian era or American Wild West where women don bust-enhancing corsetry with lace and leather, and can-can skirts. For the groom, go for a tailored vest look with optional tailcoat or structured jacket. Accessorising is the most important detail of a Steampunk look for both bride and groom. Details should include the top-hat with aviator goggles, pocket-watch, bow-tie, boots and other accents that resemble body armour like leather holsters or gloves.

Decor details

Based on the aesthetics of steam-powered machinery your wedding should possess these details: Metallic gears, clock innards, light bulbs and anything inspired by airships or hot-air balloons. These can be incorporated to the set-up, wedding favours and cake like this cool creation by Missus Bonbon. That includes traditional letterpressed stationery designed by Paper Tiger Press. Use shades of bronze, gold and metallics in your décor liberally.

The flowers

Instead of soft frilly flowers, go for hardy blooms like orchids with deep rich shades to complement the industralised décor. Check out this Steampunk bouquet by Fiore Dorato made up of brown vanda orchids, craspedia, calla lily and odontocidium wildcat orchids, tightly bound with hand-coiled wire.

The venue

A barn is the perfect place to set-up a Steampunk wedding, but if there aren't any available in your area, the next best option is an industrial space with exposed metal beams, concrete floors, distressed walls and bulbs hanging from ceilings like Wheeler's Yard or Lolla, or a saloon-type bar like Manhattan Bar at Regent Singapore.
