"There is an evolution in each phase of every person's life, one that indirectly forms and forges their character," said Biyan Wanaatmadja about his latest Spring/Summer 2017 collection, "Benang Merah". Befitting its theme, which means "connecting thread" in Indonesian, the collection brings together a diverse range of shapes, colors, textures, sounds, and other elements, including those revisited from his past works.
Benang Merah is dominated by shades of red yet filled with a variety of other colors ranging from coral to indigo blue, inspired by the colorful Chintz fabrics exported from Gujarat, India to China and Indonesia many centuries ago. Luxurious materials such as lame jacquard and lace are daringly mixed with basic ones such as denim and linen, then paired with prints and embroidery from Biyan's past collections. Handcrafted brass, carved bones, and freshwater pearls are only a few of the intricate elements that form a part of the beadwork and jewelry in this enchanting Spring/Summer 2017 collection.
Biyan acknowledged that his latest works this year seem different to his other collections in the past. There is a bohemian spirit and a hint of whimsy in this collection. However, all the elements were composed in tune, creating a beautiful sense of contrast and harmony. Biyan's exploration of colors and textures has produced a collection that is free-spirited, intricate, yet somehow remains wearable. It is wholly unsurprising that his showcase invited a standing ovation from a bevy of local celebrities, socialites, loyal clients, and the who's who of the Indonesian fashion industry who gathered at the prestigious The Dharmawangsa hotel in Jakarta.
