There is a sparkle in her eyes that tells you she's the one to spend the rest of your life with, and you're about to make it a reality. Your journey together begins with a proposal, which is so much more than getting down on one knee with a shimmering ring. After all, this is a memory your partner will look back upon fondly, and even a story you will be telling your children. For a meaningful proposal that will be remembered for years to come, check out these 5 tips.

Avoid a cookie-cutter proposal

We all know the classic proposal — take her to a romantic dinner, bring out the bouquet and ring, get down on one knee, and pop the question. Skip the cliches. While you certainly shouldn't take the romance out of it, try to plan a proposal around things, places and activities that she likes. It shows her that you understand and care about what she loves. Speak from your heart and not a script when you ask for her hand so she can feel your connection.

Tell your story

It is truly magical that two individuals can cross paths in life and become one. Every couple has their unique stories, and so do you! Take inspiration from memorable events and milestones in your relationship and show her that every part of your journey together is important to you. It may be the place you first met, or the song playing when you had your first kiss together. These little touches go a long way to let her know you are the one for her.

Do some DIY

Put some effort in it! As much as you are capable of, be involved in your proposal. It can be cutting and pasting your photos together to make a scrapbook, making a banner asking "Will You Marry Me?", or even writing her a song or poem. If you're the multimedia type, put together a video, a website, or an app! The thought counts a whole lot.

Tone down the dramatics

We all love romantic scenes from chick flicks. That said, make sure not to go overboard. While flash mobs and extravagant public proposals have gone viral, make sure that your significant other is comfortable with attention or you might stress her out and get a reverse reaction. Instead of being surrounded by strangers in the public, perhaps she would prefer soaking in the blessings of family and friends?

Capture the moment

A meaningful proposal is a memorable one, but it definitely helps if you have images and videos to look back to. If you can afford to, hire a professional photographer to capture the moment she says "yes", the ambience of your proposal, and the smile on your faces as you lock in an embrace to celebrate your future together.
