Kasalang Abe at Eloisa

When someone we love enters into an intercultural relationship with a "stranger" from another country, we sometimes tend to feel a bit uneasy about the decision. In the Philippines, it is due to many factors. The most glaring one is this: people close to you often expect to at least see your beau -- or if it's late into the relationship, your fiancé -- several times before you get married, to perhaps "size him up" and check whether he (or she) deserves a lifetime with you, or not. Such is the tight ties of Filipino extended families (which actually often include closest friends who call your mom and dad "Tita" and "Tito"). Your engagement is pretty much theirs, as well; if only a single ring can fit tens upon tens of fingers, it would and it should, if you're a Filipino. That Abe and Eloisa managed to keep their relationship quite private in this context is a wonder. Be that as it may, they proved to everyone that there simply was nothing to be uneasy about. Come the wedding, Eloisa's friends -- many whom met Koren-American Abe for the first time only a few tumbles before the big day -- blew a collective sigh of relief when our guy turned out to be an all-smiling, genuinely nice guy who's willing to go the extra mile to show his devotion to his Filipina beloved. And how long an extra mile it turned out to be, as Abe's closest friends all rallied behind him and flew halfway 'round the world just to attend their guy's wedding. Tell me who your friends are and I'll tell you who you are? Well, here we are telling you that Abe is in the company of people who pull all the stops for someone they value. Eloisa's in very good hands, and her friends and family -- especially her burly brothers! -- feel it warmly. The groom side of the family did not get to attend the wedding for a number of important reasons, but they made sure to let Eloisa feel their love and blessing: during their pre-wedding shoot, Abe's mom lent Eloisa their family's heirloom hanbok (https://www.bridestory.com/habi-collective-media/projects/abe-loisa-rehearses-married-life), an act with symbolism so deep, Eloisa knew: this path to forever is strengthened by the force of unquestioning love from the most important people in their lives.
