Sumi Hie, from Indonesia and Martijn Valk, from Netherlands both reside in Singapore. Despite the cultural differences, it did not stop Martijn from making sure that he got the blessing from Sumi's father, who cannot speak English, for her hand in marriage.
The couple first solemnised at the Resort & Spa Sentosa, witnessed by their immediate family. A few months later they held their wedding dinner at Raffles Hotel Singapore for an intimate guestlist of 65.
Not only is the venue centralised and convenient, the couple also enjoyed the setting, "We liked the fact that Raffles Hotel has an outdoor space for guests to have cocktails, as well as indoors for the dinner event itself," said the couple.
With only three months to plan, and no wedding planner, the couple rallied all the help they could get from their friends. From flowers (Sumi's friend started With Every) to décor and coordination, everything was done perfectly and the night ran smoothly.
Decoration was kept to a minimal, however the set-up was still very elegant with the colour combination of white, black and gold. The bride – a creative director – designed the invitation cards and couple logo. The couple also styled their own table-settings and painted black pebbles gold as table seating paperweights.
