When you look at a couple’s radiant faces on their wedding day, smiling at each other from ear to ear, it’s hard to believe that at some point in their lives, they will find they don’t like each other that much. What? What? Newsflash, my friends, marriage has that effect on people. I guess your mother forgot to mention that to you, huh? Yeah, mine too! I thought I knew it all before I stepped into the journey towards eternal marital bliss. I thought that the most common potential conflict areas were either financial, sexual or children-related matters. I was wrong. Granted, those are the biggest areas. But there are little-little areas in between too. Such as, cleanliness or decisiveness. Like forgetting a call. Who knew that forgetting to call because I was busy could have such an effect on a woman? (shudders) Or like forgetting to take my shoes off before I enter the house after she had just finished mopping. Oh wow. I’m pretty sure my wife didn’t like me very much after that little incident. And there were time where I just wasn’t “feeling it” that much either. These things happens. Conflicts happen. They’re the ones that makes marriage hard. They’re probably the ones behind Jenny McCarthy’s rightful statement: “if it’s easy, they’d call the whole damn thing a honeymoon!” But here’s the good news. Big problems are rarely the result of one big incident. They are usually the accumulation of many little problems. So, if you deal with every little problems that come your way properly and at once or when you quickly jump back from not liking your spouse, you’re very unlikely to find yourself not liking your spouse for a long time. And the best way to stop not liking her? Laugh it off! Laugh a lot with each other (not at each other!) and take every opportunity to remind yourselves that you are together because you like each other a lot. Well, on most days, anyway.
